RP-PvP FAQ
From RavenholdtWiki
The following is a compilation of the other RP-PvP FAQs from the WoW forums. Thanks to Rook of Malestrom and Ehrin of Emerald Dream, who provided the bulk of this information.
What is an RP-PvP server?
RP-PvP servers allows players to immerse themselves in the World of Warcraft story with the added thrill and danger of a PvP server. To accomplish this, RP-PvP servers use Blizzards Role-Playing (RP) Server Policy with PvP game mechanics.
The following paragraph from the WoW Roleplay Policy best summarizes the purpose of the Ravenholdt Server:
"While other servers allow you to play World of Warcraft, these servers are intended to let you live World of Warcraft. Within this environment you will embark on long-lasting adventures, foster enduring comradeships, and wage epic wars. Cultivating an environment that allows this level of immersion rests largely upon the shoulders of you, the player."
If you are new to WoW roleplaying, please review Official RP Server Policy [1]
If you are new to PvP combat, please review the Official PvP rules [2]
What happens if someone violates the RP Server Policy?
Violations of the RP Server Policy can result in anything from a warning to an account suspension.
The most common policy violation is a character or guild having a non-RP name. The consequence is a forced name change.
If you see someone who violates the names, feel free to report them. Leetganker and Hawtcorpse are kind of annoying to see running by when you're trying to roleplay, and the GMs are happy to help out when you have a legitimate grievance such as that.
What kind of name can I use for my character?
A: Use a name that fits in with the fantasy setting of the Warcraft universe. Be creative and choose a name that that reflects the way you will play your character.
Avoid using names of characters from popular fantasy books and movies (e.g. Frodo, Gandalf, Merlin, and Hagrid) or Greek Mythology (Odysseus, Zeus, and Apollo).
Names such as Pointydagger, Leetdood, Yourdead, and Fearmages violate the RP Server Policy, and will likely be reported.
Basically, use any name that sounds like it would fit in the setting of World of Warcraft. You'll know when you've got something that doesn't fit, and you'll know when you've got something great.
What kind of language should I use on an RP-PVP server?
For the most part, simply speak in regular English. Just be sure it is in the context of the game world.
Words like thee, thou, art, thyne and other terms that considered to be Old English are generally avoided. Moreover, depending on the race such language might be completely inappropriate. For example, an orc would not typically say:
<Gorgas> says: Forsooth, wouldst thou like to crush thyne enemies?
Some races, however, do have different accents. For example, Trolls commonly speak with a Caribbean accent:
<ZulJin> says: Ya tink dat would be a good idea, mon?
Players often use Scottish accents when playing Dwarves:
<Muradin> says: Ill ave a pint with ya laddy!
Just remember to speak not as you would, but as your character would.
Do I need a background story for my character?
No, but it helps if you have some idea of your characters history to draw upon to help you figure out how he or she will react to certain situations and people.
Here is a (very) simplified example: Your Human character lost her parents at the hand of the Orcish Horde during the Second War. She now has a deep-seeded hatred of all Orcs and will go out of her way to kill as many of them as she can.
Here are two links that can help provide inspiration for those seeking to create a backstory that ties in with the WoW story:
If you create a background story for your character, post it here and/or on the Ravenholdt forums so everyone can enjoy it!
How do I meet other dedicated RPers?
There are a couple ways to enhance your RP experience.
First, get the one of several roleplaying addons:
These not only flag you as a roleplayer, but also your RP style and experience. You can even have a surname and short character description. They're cross compatible, so you'll see this information for anyone (of your faction) using any of these mods. Pick the one you like the best and run with it. There are many other roleplaying mods with varying uses, but character description mods such as those listed above are the most widely used.
Second, join the Ravenholdt RP channel by typing /join RP
Do I really need to roleplay in Party and Raid chat?
No, it is not required but it is recommended you ask your group first if Party or Raid will be OOC or not. Some groups like to roleplay in instances at times to further plot lines and whatnot.
Why won't the GMs do anything about corpse camping/ganking?
This is an RP-PvP realm and by coming here you accept the possibility of this happening. If there is a PvP solution to a problem on an RP-PvP server, you are expected to use it. It pays to make friends in this game, so find a higher-level buddy or two so they can help bail you out of tight spots when you need.
